The North East is renowned for its great engineering.
This is first seen in the innovations in defensive structures to ensure security and safety in this border region.
Later this is reversed as the Region seeks to promote movement of goods and people. Its primary claim is as the birthplace of the passenger railway. This in turn saw great leaps forward in infrastructure engineering, such as bridges. Neither should we forget the pioneering work in maritime infrastructure, nor the often overlooked fact that the North East produced the first effective electric supply grid - creating the potential for today's world.
