The North East is a place which clearly inspires artists. Think of local artists such as Thomas Bewick, John Martin; or Turner and Lowry on visits to the Region. Significantly it has also inspired in its residents an appreciation of art. Whether this be the first visitors to the stately splendour of the purpose-built Bowes museum, the working class self education tradition exampled by the Pitman Painters, or the more recent success of venues such as the Baltic inspiring contemporary creativity.
It is hard to imagine the places listed here, and the works they contain, existing in the way they do anywhere else. In very different ways they all root the experience of their art within the place, its traditions and aspirations.
