Jarrow Town Hall

Tyne and Wear

Social Reform

Today the grade II listed Jarrow Town Hall is a reminder of the industrial and civic pride of a once thriving mining, ship building and engineering town. Its position in the social history of the Region is however even more significant, as it was from here that the Jarrow March began.

Known also as the Jarrow Hunger March or Jarrow Crusade, 207 marchers accompanied by their MP, Ellen Wilkinson walked nearly 300 miles to the Palace of Westminster in October 1936 to petition Parliament about the high levels of unemployment and poverty which were destroying lives and communities across the North East of England.
