The Hatton Gallery is home to one of the most iconic artworks of the 20th Century, the Merzbarn – the last work of artist Kurt Schwitters - and the public face of Newcastle Art School, an important producer and employer of many distinguished artists. This includes Victor Pasmore and Richard Hamilton; two of the leading figures in the Basic Design movement in British art education. They initiated new ways of art educational thinking which were to have a major impact on the schools and colleges in Britain in the 1950s to 1970s.
Newcastle continues to build upon a tradition of one of the best cities in the UK in which to study and make contemporary visual art.
