Gibside estate near Rowlands Gill in Tyne and Wear is a stunning 18th century landscape garden and a superb example of its kind.

It differs from many country estates in that the main house, whilst grand, was not its focal point. Instead, the long walk through the estate actually runs from the Column of Liberty to the Palladian chapel, which is itself an architectural masterpiece.

Gibside is a Georgian 'grand design' on a spectacular scale, reflecting improvements carried out by the Bowes-Lyon family in the 1700s and early 1800s. The vision of coal baron George Bowes, the Palladian chapel is approached by a lawned avenue of oaks helping create one of the finest landscapes in the North.
